Sailed up the Caldon today and was amazed at how much crap was at the bottom of the canal, a major bump under most bridges in the city area and the rubbish floating on the canal just goes to show that the appreciation of a canal in a city is purely a means for dumping waste like it’s a skip or something. One thing that crossed my mind is, as some may know, the city area of the canal is built up of old derelict pot banks and ex works, also a lot of old wasteland/scrub, this is being developed into new housing and apartment schemes. If the canal was to be dredged where would the dredgings go, from the start of the Caldon at Etruria to say rural Stoke in Milton/Endon, its 6 miles, this would be near impossible but more likely unfeasible for a major dredge programme, this also considering that the new B/W 3 man dredging gang for the Wales and Border County East section is now not going to happen,, How bad is the canal system you use in need of a dredging programme. _________________ John

It seems that the only canals that get dredged these days are the ones which have a lot of hire boat activity, and how do I know this. I know this because a BW man told me. It seems for BW to dredge every canal it would cost a small fortun, because they have to pay the government for every tonne they pull out of the canal, because it is classed as hazardous waste. He reckoned it costs around £21 a tonne. So you can imagine how much dredging needs doing. The cost will rocket.
But I know what you mean about the Caldon. _________________ .·:*¨¨*:·. Friends are like stars. You do not always see them, but you know they are always there .·:*¨¨*:·. |

In that case BW are in trouble because over this summer they have dredged up around 1,000 tonnes of the stuff from the Ashby and dumped it along the towpath. _________________ When you come to the Ashby we'll loo out for you!

I've just done a bit of Googling (so I am obviously now an expert on the subject) and it looks like it's only hazardous waste if there are hazardous substances/items in the canal. _________________ When you come to the Ashby we'll loo out for you!
